Have you ever had a Hammam treatment?
During my stay in Kuala Lumpur my sister in law gave me this wonderful treatment. She told me she booked a 2 hours traditional Moroccan Hammam Spa treatment. It was my first time so I didn’t know what to expect. I started to smile and was thinking Yeah!! 2 hours Spa Treatment. Nice! I like massages! At the same time I thought about those crazy stories of masseurs throwing and bending bodies (Oops...)
A bit unsure but excited I entered the Hammam Spa. I got a warm welcome from a lovely lady who showed me the changing room and gave me disposable underwear, a robe, towel and some rubber slippers. She led me to a hot steamy room where I had to sit down on a slippery marble table. Her grins were saying, “STRIP, SIT and ENJOY”. Before I knew, she was bathing me with soap.
Warm water was gently poured over my head while she washed my hair and body. A bit awkward though, but it felt natural for me. She just kept smiling and after the soap session she let me know that she would be back in 15 minutes.
Meanwhile I was laying on this slippery marble table half naked trying to relax in the hot steamy room, controlling my breath and trying not to slide off……! My neighbor comes here quite often, she was laying there next to me on her own marble table! Just with her eyes closed and enjoying the zen music.
After 15 minutes my mind slowly relaxed and my breathing was regular again.
The smiling lady came back in the room. Out of the blue she was scrubbing my whole body. It was like she was peeling my skin off with a sandpaper. My face went from SMILEY to WHY ME?!?!……I tried not to watch when she was slowly coming to my breasts with this “sandpaper”(ouch!).
Looking at my body to see all my skin peeled off, I wonder if it was soap or just many dirty layers coming off my skin. I’m quite sure I bath every day and use a scrub once a week. But I was a bit confused seeing all this “dirt”: I must be doing something wrong. (uh oh)
After the soap/scrub session it was time for some relaxing in the tearoom while I was waiting for the masseuse to start with the massage. After 1 hour of full body massage all my muscles were loose and my mind relaxed. It seems the scrub session had paid off because my whole body felt like a baby, so soft!
It was an experience that I’d never had before. It’s not the Hammam-style that surprised me, but the treatment itself; and most of all how much dead skin comes off your body.
Hammam means “Spreader of Warmth” in Arabic and has its roots in Ancient Greek Roman bathhouse culture.
It was GREAT! Just DO IT and enjoy the treatment!
TIP! There’s no time to be shy...
